Effects of war on ecosystems?

I have often wondered what were/are the effects of war on an ecosystem. During our great wars, where constant shelling and bombing occurs, or when a nation detonated a nuclear weapon underwater; how many animals are being killed? Has there ever been a study on the effects of war on our flora and fauna? Has a species gone extinct from the direct effects of war?
